Construction of a bicycle-pedestrian bridge on existing piers of a road bridge over the Wkra river in Pomiechówek.

In 2016 we started a new project of a footbridge for pedestrians and bicycles. The greatest challenge and the core idea regarding this footbridge was to support the structure on existing piers - on its cutwaters. The cutwaters have a triangular shape and their main task is to protect the piers from the flow of ice and river debris. The footbridge has its spans the same length as the existing bridge L=6x20m. To make the footbridge as light as possible, we have designed a steel structure on two main girders with orthotropic deck. The width of the deck is 3,5m. The abutments are located in existing slopes of embankments.

Interesting facts

For the existing piers to be able to support a new footbridge, some very sophisticated demolitions were required. The inclined edge of the cutwater needed shaping as “stairs”. Then a new triangular diaphragm was erected. The illumination of the footbridge was designed inside the rails of the balustrade.
