We made the design for a construction permit of a road bridge along highway No. A-2 on section B Stryków-Konotopa over the Rawka river. The bridge is located in the area of the Bolimowski Scenic Park.
The design turned out to be quite a challenge, as there was a restriction to preserve the natural line of the river and no support could be erected closer than 20m to the riverbank. That seemed like no problem at the beginning, however… the river had just made an unpleasant surprise in the form of a meander – a bend that turns almost at 180 degrees. With less space available than expected, we came up with a pier founded on a pentagonal foundation fitted exactly in the allowed area.
The bridge itself consists of two independent deck structures with the theoretical span between abutments of 595,0m. From among 11 spans, the longest ones , closest to the river, are 85m long, and the shortest, reaching abutments, are 35m long. The total width of both decks is 36,8m. The main structural elements are two steel T-shape beams of varying height with reinforced concrete deck slab on top.
Below the viaduct there is a passage for wildlife, which is half a kilometre wide.
The pier by the river is too narrow to support both decks and we had to design extra cantilevers of an immense span of over 9,0 metres. The cantilevers were finally constructed from a post—tensioned high grade concrete.
